Examination procedure - German

The graphic shows the three parts of the FSP examination at KIT: text production (70 minutes), listening comprehension with two lectures and 40 minutes of working time, and reading comprehension with scientific structures (90 minutes).

Subject Processing time Objective Content/focus
Text production 70 minutes

The aim of this part of the examination is to demonstrate that you are able to express yourself independently and coherently in writing on a study-related and science-oriented topic with the help of a chart, a graph (statistics) and/or one or two statements and to write an argumentative factual text. The text should not exceed 250 words.

Competence profile

Listening comprehension 10 minutes after the 1st lecture
40 minutes after the 2nd lecture
The aim of this part of the examination is to complete tasks on a factual text with a scientific background. The answers are given on the basis of a transcript, closely following the text read out twice. Notes may be taken during the first lecture. You will only receive the tasks after the first lecture.
Reading comprehension and scientific language structures
(grammar) is divided into two parts.
90 minutes
In the first part of the exam, you have to complete tasks on a presented text and answer questions on language and content.

  • explaining difficult expressions, parts of sentences or sentences
  • explaining the different meanings of related words
  • answering questions
  • presenting the argumentation structure of the text.
In the second part of the examination, candidates are given tasks to demonstrate their ability to deal with grammatical structures relevant to scientific language. As a rule, these are transformations. The basis for the transformations is a sentence (or several coherent sentences) from the reading text.
  • Passive voice
