    FAQ

    Why DSH exam?

Foreign applicants and German applicants with foreign qualifications have to prove sufficient German language skills before beginning their studies. Evidence is provided by passing the DSH (or the TestDaF).

The purpose of the exam is to show that candidates have the ability, both in general and academic terms, to start the subject with the prospect of success.

The German part of the "Feststellungsprüfung" is identical to DSH at KIT.

    How is the DSH organized?

The DSH consists of a written and an oral part. The written part includes text production, listening comprehension and reading comprehension, as well as science-related structures (grammar).

What ist the procedure of the written exam?

After all candidates have been assigned seats, the exam begins:
    • Text production (70 minutes processing time)
    • Short break by gathering the sheets for text production and then handing out the paper and the questions for listening comprehension
    • Listening comprehension: 10 minutes to read the excercise and prepare the note sheet
    • First reading of the text
    • 10 minutes to complete the notes or edit the excercise.
    • Second reading
    • 40 minutes to edit the excercises
    • 15 minutes break
    • Reading comprehension (90 minutes processing time)

    What does text production includes?

The purpose of this part of the exam is to prove that you are able to describe and argue a context or process using a graph or statistic. The scope should not exceed 250 words. The exam can consist of one or two excercises.

    Processing time: 70 minutes
Approved tools: A monolingual dictionary to bring along.

    What does listening comprehension includes?

The aim of this part is to process exercises to a text with a scientific background. The answer is based on a transcript, which is created based on the twice read text.

    Processing time: 40 minutes
Approved tools: A monolingual dictionary to bring along.

What does reading comprehension and scientific language structure (grammr) mean?

Reading comprehension and scientific language structures (grammar) is divided into two parts:

In the first part of the exam, you have to work on a text and answer questions about language and content. For example, the required competence in reading comprehension is demonstrated by:
    • the formation of headings for individual sections
    • the explanation of difficult expressions, phrases or sentences
    • the explanation of the different meanings of related words.
In the second part of the exam, excercises are presented to proof the candidates ability to deal with grammatical structures that are relevant to scientific language. These are usually transformations. Basis for the transformations is a sentence (or several coherent sentences) from the reading text. Emphases are:
    • passive
    • modal verbs
    • verbalisations
    • Paricipial constructions and relative clauses
    • conjunctional
    • Subjunctive I and II
    Processing time: 90 minutes
Approved tools: A monolingual dictionary to bring along.

    What does oral exam includes?

If you have to take an oral exam according to the requirements of the exam regulations, you will receive an individual appointment within the oral exam period. Please note: If you do not attend the oral exam, the entire DSH is considered failed.

Procedure: First of all, you have 20 minutes to prepare for the oral exam on the basis of an interview template. Following this, the actual exam takes place on the topic of the interview template. The duration of the exam is 15 to 20 minutes. A dictionary for preparation is provided.

How much does the DSH cost?

The fee is 100 €. It has to be paid by all participants.

    Structure:

The exam is divided into a written and an oral part.
Subject of the written examination (focus T) are three subjects:

    • German (180 Minuten)
    • Mathematics (180 Minuten)
    • Physics, Chemistry or Computer science (180 Minuten)

The oral exam covers the subjects of the written exam and another subject not chosen in the written exam (chemistry, computer science or physics).

Examination procedure T-course participants (internal participants)

Internal subscribers, i.e. students who attend the Studienkolleg, receive a semester certificate for their achievements in the second semester in all subjects (German, mathematics, physics, computer science with electrical engineering internship or chemistry with chemistry internship).
The written exam covers German, mathematics, physics or chemistry or computer science. The oral exam in the respective subject may be waived if the average of the semester grade and the written exam is at least 4.0 and the difference ('amount of difference') is at most one grade. If both grades (semester grade and written exam) are not sufficient in at least two subjects, there is no oral exam and the FSP is not passed.
Feststellungsprüfung in T1: Under certain conditions, the FSP may be written in one or more subjects after the first semester. For this, the average grade of the first semester in the relevant subject must be at least 2.5 and all lecturers must agree.
The overall grade results for passed FSP from the (possibly weighted) average of all relevant sub-grades. You will be exempted from a subject if you have passed the exam or (if repeated) the grade is accepted. In this case, the grade obtained in the early part will be included in the overall grade.
If you do not get a sufficient final grade in only one subject, you can take a re-examination. The re-examination takes place about a month after the FSP. The conditions are the same as for the (first) FSP. In particular, the semester grade is retained if available.

    Examination procedure external participants

External participants are students who have not attended a Studienkolleg. They have no semester grade.
The written exam also covers German, mathematics, physics or chemistry or computer science.

Admission to the external Feststellungsprüfung is generally bound to a subsequent study entry.

The grade of the written exam is weighted twice! The oral examination in the respective subject may be waived for external participants if the written exam has been graded at least 3.5. There is always an oral exam in the non-written subject.
The registration takes place by written application for the following dates:

    • Wintersemester: until 31 July
    • Sommersemester: until 31 December

    Please contact info?stk.kit.edu for this.

Eignungsprüfung für den Hochschulzugang besonders qualifizierte Berufstätige

For admission to study at a university, the university entrance qualification is in the form of e.g. Abitur or Fachhochschulreife usually a prerequisite. In order to provide access to those without a university entrance qualification, the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK) has issued the Ordinance on the Access of Professionals to Studies (BerufsZHV). As a result, persons fulfilling the requirements set out under "Prerequisites and Admission" can apply to the university for a determination of the professional equivalent of their vocational education and training with the chosen degree program.

Who is allowed to take the exam at the Studienkolleg of the KIT?

At the Studienkolleg of the KIT, only applicants for scientific and technical (engineering) fields of study are examined. Applicants at all universities in Baden Württemberg can be examined here.

Applicants for other fields of study can register at the ISZ Heidelberg.

Participation in the examination must be submitted in writing to the relevant university for the following winter semester by 31 January each year.

    Requirements and approval

The Studienkolleg at KIT carries out the "Berufstätigenprüfung" every year in May on the basis of the Berufshochschule Access Ordinance (BerufsHZVO).

Applicants must first contact the university at which they wish to study. The respective student secretariat informs the applicants about the admission requirements and advises applicants on their choice of subject. The admission university decides to take part in the exam and then registers the candidates for examination.

Only after a discussion with the study advisor will the consultation at the Studienkolleg on the examination contents take place.

A direct registration for the exam at the Studienkolleg Karlsruhe is not possible. The registration must be done by the university.

Information on the procedure can be found on the SLE's website at: http://www.sle.kit.edu/vorstudium/hochschulzugang-berufstaetige.php

The exam is subject to a charge. Currently the examination fee is 200 €. This amount is due for review at the time of registration and must be paid by March 31st at the latest.
