Content of the courses accompanying the studies

The list of courses corresponds to the competence levels given in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR / GER) of the Council of Europe.

The courses names start with a letter stating the level of GER to be reached in the course. Some levels are sub-divided: A 1.1 is a course leading to level A 1.1. The last digit states the number of semester periods per week.

A 1.1.4

This course is suited for all students/PhD students/post-docs, who wish to improve their general language skills. During the lessons, all language skills (understanding when reading, understanding when listening, written and oral communication) are trained and enhanced.

This course is not a preparation course for German proficiency tests (such as the DSH, TestDaf, etc.). However, participants can take the DSH at the end of the summer semester.

Courses accompanying the studies to reach special skills

Wissenschaftliches Schreiben (Scientific writing)

This course will improve your skills in the production of scientific articles.

Content

The course focusses on practice. You can feel free to bring your own texts to the course to work on it in a group or alone. We will analyse texts written by the participants together and try to improve them linguistic. At the same time we will talk about characteristics of the german scientific language:

  • Choosing the proper expression and handling technical terms
  • Grammar of texts (z.B. Partizipialattribute, Nominalstil, Satzgefüge)

Moreover we will practise with different strategies of writing (e.g. definitions, deductive reasoning, building hypothesisses) and the formal structure of an article.

This course does not prepare for a language exam (DSH, TestDaF etc.)!

Wie halte ich einen Vortrag auf Deutsch? Wissenschaftliche Inhalte präsentieren (Giving a talk in german - presenting scientific content)

This course teaches foreign language students, PhD-students and PostDocs to present scientific content in an universitary environment.

 

Content

We will present the basic rules of a good talk (structure of content, linguistic mode of expression, body language) and presentations with or without support of media (overhead transparencies, powerpoint). Moreover we will work out intercultural differences and save time to practise the presented content. Additionally we will do exercises in elocution.

The focus will be on implementing the learnings. Every participant will have te possibility to give a talk.

This course does not prepare for a language exam (DSH, TestDaF etc.)!

Grammatik C 1 (Grammar C 1)

This course is suited for everyone studiying or working scientifically at KIT, who wants to improve their scientific german.

We will talk about and practise in grammatical phenomens with syntactic context in the field of scientific german.

DaF-MINT

German as foreign language for stutents in a MINT-subject / technical language MINT / technical german in MINT-subjects

This course is suited for foreign-language-students in a MINT-subject, who want to train and improve their decision-making and responsibility in (technical) german. Therefore several strategies for the skill requirements (understanding of written and spoken text, written and spoken expression) are teached and trained, which are neccessary to understand articles related to the study or to describe an experimental set-up.
